From the Desk of Mrs. Taylor

August 2016

Dear Parents/Guardians & Students,

Welcome to the 2016 – 2017 school year at Piute Middle School. I am planning and anticipating a year filled with challenge, learning, and excitement. It is my goal to provide the tools necessary for your child’s academic success. In turn, I hope that your child enjoys and benefits from his/ her 7
th grade learning experience in World History.

Students in 7th Grade World History will study the social, cultural, and technological changes that occurred in Europe, Africa, and Asia in the years A.D. 500–1789. Students will also learn about great civilizations and the ideas, beliefs, technologies, and commodities as they develop concurrently throughout the world during medieval and early modern times. They will also examine the Enlightenment period, and concepts of reason and authority, the natural rights of human beings, and the divine rights of kings. In studying this period students will learn how these concepts give rise to democratic ideas that influence ideas in countries throughout the world, including the United States.

Expectations: Knowing what is expected can help your child meet their educational goals with a positive attitude. Students are expected to come to class on time and prepared to learn with proper supplies, participate in class work and activities, and complete assignments on time. In addition, all students are expected to be on their best behavior at all times in the classroom and respect the right of other students to get an education.

Classroom rules: These rules are established to create an environment that is conducive for learning for all students. My classroom rules are simple:

Discipline Policy: Students are expected to follow all classroom and school rules. Disruptive or defiance behavior may result in parent call, lunch detention, and or office referral.

Students are rewarded for good behavior with praise, good news calls home, and Piute Warrior tickets.

Grading: Success in school cannot be achieved when assignments are not done. Therefore, it is imperative that all assignments be completed and turned in on time. Late assignments receive a maximum of 50% credit and need to be labeled “Late” and turned in. If work is not done, students will receive a zero on the assignment and participation. Homework will be given 2-3 times per week and can require internet research. You are encouraged to check PowerSchool often for grades.

Grades are based on three components
    • 1. Classwork - including Cornell Notes, vocabulary, writing, reading and lesson activities. Classwork is in written in the Social Studies Interactive Notebook (SSINB).
    • 2. Participation in class – failure to complete assignments and conduct will effect this grade
    • 3. Projects, quizzes, exams

My grading scale is as follows:
    A = 90% - 100%, B = 80% - 89%, C = 70% - 79%, D = 60% - 69%, F = Below 60%

Absences: Upon return from an absence, students should check with a reliable classmate, talk with me, or check my website – www.MrsTaylor.net for assignments. Student should make up absent assignment promptly upon returning to school

School Supplies: A dedicated spiral notebook for history/social science with at least 100 pages (college-ruled), extra notebook paper, black or dark blue pens, #2 pencils, glue stick, 2 color highlighters, markers, school safe scissors, and ruler.

I look forward to a successful school year and encourage your participation in your child’s 7
th grade learning experience. History/Social Science assignments and other class information are posted weekly on my website – www.MrsTaylor.net and Google classroom.

    Happy School Year,

    Mrs. Taylor
